Dwain Harris became director of the Southern AHEC in July 2004, bringing to the job a background in hospital public relations and administration, and a passion for education and rural health.

  “There are so many ways that an AHEC can make a difference,” he said, “it felt like a perfect fit for me from day one.”

  The way he sees it, his job is to make good strategic decisions, set the tone of office, participate in day-to-day programming, and otherwise stay out of the way of a very talented, passionate staff. “You won’t find any better,” he believes.

  In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis until his elbow hurts, golf until his pride hurts (usually at about the second tee) and running himself half to death on hot summer days for reasons he cannot identify. He married up, way up, to Julie, a journalist and graphic designer. Three rambunctious kids - Matthew, 6, and twin toddlers John Parker and Piper -  make for fun times at the Harris home in rural Pulaski county.
